MegaWatt 2050 invests equity in late-stage development projects, operating projects and platforms. We finance, own, operate and maintain utility-scale, grid-connected wind, solar, battery storage and hybrid projects as well as on-site commercial & industrial renewable energy projects that sell electricity under long-term power purchase agreements to blue-chip, credit worthy offtakers with energy-intensive operations in Africa.
History
MegaWatt 2050 was founded in 2021. Some of the firm’s principals have collaborated for more than two decades and as such have grown together in what was a nascent industry in Africa during this period. Their backgrounds are in investment banking, sustainable finance, utilities, African Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and fund management.
We believe the MegaWatt 2050 team’s experience and investment philosophy will once again produce long-term, consistent value creation for our investors.
The MegaWatt 2050 team has a pedigree in the energy and investment banking sectors, and they have raised and invested in excess of $6 billion dollars over the past 30 years, evolving from fossil fuels in the 1990’s to renewable and carbon reducing generation in the past decade. The team has a track record of establishing and growing asset-owing companies and forming successful joint ventures, delivering results for investors.
Our Strategy
Our investment strategy is straightforward. We partner with renewable energy developers to acquire late-stage development projects or operating projects that align with our strategy of long-term sustainable investment. The team’s deep expertise and industry knowledge combined with a strong network of energy industry relationships, makes MegaWatt 2050 a formidable player in the broader sustainable investment and green growth markets.
We prefer to form long-term partnerships with our developer management teams, collaborating to successfully finance, own and operate power generation assets. Our goal is to joint venture with local partners who will remain invested as minority equity partners in the long-term success of the projects alongside MegaWatt 2050.
Our Role
Energy sector investment is an all-encompassing, challenging and time-consuming endeavour that extends well beyond any individual discipline like technology assessment, engineering, project management, project finance, legal compliance or operations and maintenance.
While many of our counterparties possess excellent skills in one or more of these disciplines, we believe that the MegaWatt 2050 team will add significant value to most counterparties.
